# What is username/password authentication? How does it work?

Your 711Proxy username and password are used to verify that it's you when accessing our proxies. You can set your custom username and password in the dashboard - Sub-user.

For residential proxies, we use the username that you choose when setting up your proxy. The username will vary depending on your proxy setup. For example, let's say your username is "username." If you want to use an IP from the US, with a session duration of 5 minutes, your username will be "username-zone-custom-region-US-session-(sessionID)-sessTime-5".

Once you retrieve your credentials from the dashboard, you can use them to authenticate in your anti-detect browser, web scraping tools, operating system settings, browser extensions, sneaker bots, and more.
